Castor Sealer is a thick heavy oil made from the Castor Bean. In the past Castor Oil was infamously known a form of punishment due to its heavy laxative qualities.

In the makeup world its use is much more benign. The main function of Castor Sealer is to protect latex appliances such as bald caps, noses, etc. from the degrading effects of cream-based makeup. Many cream makeups contain mineral or other types of oil that will break down latex. Imagine Daddy Warbuck’s bald cap splitting open in the middle of a show! Castor sealer will prevent that and will protect your other prosthetics too.

By first coating a latex appliance with Castor Sealer you create a barrier that will keep the cream makeup oils from reaching the latex. It will also give a better look as untreated latex will make the makeup look dull and chalky.

Apply your bald cap or latex piece with Spirit Gum and then blend the edges with Liquid Latex. Make sure everything is well secured because it will be difficult if not impossible to re-glue once you have applied the Caster Sealer. Stipple a fairly heavy layer of Castor Sealer onto the piece. Then wait five to ten minutes for the Castor Sealer to absorb. Next, blot off the excess with a strong paper towel. Then apply Translucent Setting Powder. Apply your cream colors and then apply another layer of Setting Powder. Once this has been done you will not need to reapply Castor Sealer. When used with Bald Caps some artists will pat a small amount of Castor Sealer onto the finished cap. This will give the head a little bit of shine similar to what one would see on a true bald head. Some makeup artists will use a small amount of the lips to give a shimmery wet look.
