About the Show

Chicago: Fred Ebb, John Kander and Bob Fosse collaborated to create this 1979 musical hit. Set in the Roarin' Twenties, Roxie Hart murders a faithless lover and joins the ranks of the Cook County Jail's merry murderesses. Intent on using her trial process to gain publicity ad spark a vaudeville career, Roxy tries to get the help of a fellow inmate, Velma Kelly, who already has the headlines following her case. Velma ignores Roxy until the latter, with the help of Matron Morton, steals Velma's slick lawyer Billy Flynn, her headlines and even her court date. Chicago is a tale of greed, murder, corruption and fortune hunting told through a series of flashy vaudeville acts. Based on the 1926 play of the same name by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins, many of the characters are based on the historical figures that Watkins was assigned to cover during her time with the Chicago Tribune, namely Beulah Annan, Belva Gaertner and lawyers William Scott Stewart and W. W. O'Brien. The show features a succession of hit songs including “Cell Block Tango,” “When You're good to Mama, “ Mr. Cellophane, “Razzle Dazzle” and “All That Jazz.”
