Summary:

The devil Mephistopheles makes a wager with God that he can corrupt Dr. Heinrich Faust, a scholar deeply dissatisfied with the limits of human knowledge.  Mephistopheles restores Faust's youth and helps him seduce an innocent young woman named Gretchen; an affair that ends in tragedy.
