Summary:  After his mother's death, low-born, impoverished clerk Monty Navarro learns that he is a distant relative of the fabulously wealthy D'Ysquith banking family and ninth in line to inherit the title of Earl of Highhurst.  When the ruling members of the family coldly dismiss his claims and refuse to help him, Monty decides to take matters into his own hands.  He embarks on a mischievous and comedic quest to eliminate the eight eccentric D'Ysquith heirs standing between him and the title, all while juggling his romance with the status-seeking, married Sibella and his growing connection to the charming Phoebe D'Ysquith.
