Authors: George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart
Time Period: early 1940s
Setting: Bucks County, Pennsylvania
Summary: City-dweller Newton Fuller convinces his resistant wife, Annabelle, to buy a cheap, broken-down country farmhouse because he believes George Washington once slept there. However, the rural "paradise" brings endless disasters: including no water, an aggressive neighbor fighting over property lines, a daughter attracted to a local summer-stock actor, and an onslaught of unwanted weekend guests. Nearing financial ruin and foreclosure, the family is saved at the last minute by a twist involving a supposedly wealthy uncle and the discovery of a historic document, leaving Newton happily settled as a country squire.
