Summary:  Horace Vandergelder, a wealthy and misanthropic merchant in Yonkers, decides to remarry and hires local matchmaker Dolly Levi.  Meanwhile, Vandergelder’s two underpaid clerks, Cornelius and Barnaby, lock up the shop and sneak off to New York City to find "adventure and kiss a girl". Vandergelder’s niece, Ermengarde, tries to elope with her forbidden artist lover, Ambrose Kemper.  At a fancy restaurant in the city, everyone converges in whirlwind of mistaken identities which Dolly smoothly orchestrates, leaving everyone happily paired.
