Summary:  The fictional country of Pontevedro is nearly bankrupt. Hanna Glawari has inherited twenty million francs from her late husband, but if she marries a Frenchman, her fortune leaves the country, causing Pontevedro's total financial ruin.  Ambassador Baron Mirko Zeta schemes to have Count Danilo Danilovitch marry her to keep the money local. Meanwhile, romantic and comical subplots unfold and Hanna tricks Danilo into finally confessing his love for her, which Hanna joyfully accepts.
