Summary: Harold Hill is a conman who finds himself in River City. Planning on taking the residents' money and skipping town, he tells the parents that he will form a marching band for the town's youth. Through sly tactics, he manages to distract the local school board members and other citizens, but town librarian and piano teacher, Marian Paroo, doubts Harold from the start. However, Harold wins over her mother and her young, lisping brother, Winthrop, when they discover how happy Harold's promises have made him. When Harold's past catches up to him, the town has to decide whether to turn him in or stand behind the now beloved outsider.
