Summary: Widowed lawyer Atticus Finch raises his young children, Scout and Jem, alongside their housekeeper Calpurnia in Maycomb.  He is appointed to defend Tom Robinson, a Black man falsely accused of raping a young white woman, Mayella Ewell.  The story follows Scout's daily life in a slow-paced Southern town bound by strict traditional social classes, deep-seated racial prejudices, and economic hardship.
