The traditional skimmer, also known as a "boater" or sailor hat. The "real thing" has become very expensive, but there are alternatives that work very well theatrically. The brim of this hat is 1 3/4", the crown is 3", and the paper ribbon is 2".
This economy plastic skimmer can be painted to look very convincing from stage. Paint each hat with a water base or latex paint in a harvest gold color. Don't attempt to fill in all the surface ridges and grooves. Rather sparingly paint, allowing the texture to come through. You may experiment with the color, perhaps adding some brown. Replace the paper band with a fabric one, preferably striped.
