The standard for realistic special effects textures. The perfect sponge for creating effects such as bruising, beard stippling, prosthetic texturing and abrasions.
A stipple sponge is an open weave textured sponge. The word stipple is descriptive of the technique used with the sponge. Stippling is when you tap the sponge onto the skin in a direct up and down fashion. The amount of pressure this is done with will give you varying results.
Stipple sponges are employed in many types of makeup application weather it is beauty, stage, cosplay or F/X. In beauty it can be used to create freckles. It is recommended to use a light and a dark brown. The blending of the two shades gives a more natural effect. For stage and cosplay a single heavier color will be more visible at a distance and give a more “cartoonish” feel. Cutting the end of the sponge will give a more realistic look otherwise you may see the square shape of the sponge come through.
Stipple sponges are also employed in making stubble beards for stage, cosplay , and drag kings. At Halloween it is a simple way do add dimension to a pirate, cowboy, or biker look. Gore F/X and Moulage are other areas where this sponge works wonders, used to create realistic bruising and abrasions. When using prosthetics they work well to blend the edge of the piece. It will also make a nice blood splatter effect. The texture of this sponge is also great for fantasy characters adding interesting looks to all types of aliens, monsters, and creatures.
Another makeup use for a stipple sponge is cleaning eye shadow from a brush.
Simply swipe the brush back and forth across the sponge several times.
Stipple sponges can also be applied in non makeup settings, such as texturing clay and decorative painting. When used in makeup settings these sponges are washable and reusable.
