Aladdin Jr. is the licensed Broadway Junior stage adaptation of the beloved 1992 animated Disney film by the same name. The original version of Aladdin Jr. licensed by Music Theatre International featured a truncated score and music that closely followed the original animated film. However, MTI revised Aladdin Jr. in 2018 to more closely follow the 2014 Broadway musical adaption of the classic Disney tale. Aladdin Jr. features music by famed Disney composer Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice, and book and additional lyrics by Chad Beguelin. Broadway production of Aladdin opened on the Great White Way on March 20, 2014 at the New Amsterdam Theatre. Aladdin has been produced globally since and has gone on to become the 11th highest-grossing Broadway production of all time. The musical has since been adapted for school ensembles through the Broadway Junior musical theatre program to fit the vocal ranges, dance abilities, attention spans, and cast sizes of scholastic ensembles.
The story of Aladdin Jr. begins as Genie and the citizens of Agrabah welcome the audience to the fantastical Arabian desert kingdom of Agrabah. Genie and the ensemble introduce the main characters of the classic Disney tale: Aladdin and his fellow penniless pals, Babkak, Omar, and Kassim; the beautiful and strong-willed Princess Jasmine and her doting father, the Sultan; the power-hungry Grand vizier of Agrabah, Jafar, and his sardonic, hot-headed parrot sidekick, Iago (“Overture/Arabian Nights”). The action shifts focus to the marketplace, where a Shop Owner chastises Aladdin for stealing a loaf of bread from his shop. The commotion causes Razoul and his fellow Guards to chase after Aladdin and his friends (“One Jump Ahead”). Upon escaping the guards, Aladdin notices an Apple Vendor berating two young hungry Beggars. Aladdin offers the pair his bread and subsequently defends them when the arrogant Prince Abdullah shoves them out of his way (“One Jump Ahead – Reprise/Proud of Your Boy”).
From the very beginning of Aladdin’s magical journey, The Costumer will transport your audience to the extraordinary world of Agrabah with the help of fabulous rental costumes! Costume rentals for Aladdin Jr. will transform each member of your cast into their respective characters! Genie will kick off the show in an unmistakable blue satin tunic and matching pants, complete with an elaborate blue and gold collar, belt, and wrist and ankle cuffs. Aladdin will resemble that of a typical street hustler in his classic purple vest, a peasant shirt, balloon pants, and a matching sash. Razoul and his fellow Royal Guard members will be cloaked in matching burnooses, balloon pants, and coordinating vests. The Beggars in their raggedy apparel will stand in stark contrast to Prince Abdullah’s elaborate turban, ornate robe and over robe.
The story continues in the royal palace, where the evil Jafar plots alongside his parrot Iago to become the next sultan. Princess Jasmine rejects Prince Abdullah as a potential suitor, causing the Sultan to declare that his daughter must marry by the next moon. Unimpressed by the arrogant Prince and frustrated with her father’s demands, Jasmine confides in her attendants: Isir, Manal, and Rajah. The trio encourage Jasmine to open herself to life and experiences beyond the palace walls (“These Palace Walls”). While Jasmine disguises herself to venture outside of the palace, Jafar and Iago invoke a magical incantation which conjures up a Spooky Voice. The mysterious Voice reveals to Jafar that Aladdin is the key to finding a magic lamp that will make Jafar powerful enough to take the throne.
As more characters are introduced, The Costumer will continue providing your cast with costumes that will bring their roles to life! Jasmine will be draped in her iconic turquoise haram top and matching flowy pants, while her father will be adorned with a large royal turban with a matching tunic, balloon pants, and royal sash. Jafar on the other hand, will resemble the epitome of evil in a dark black and red Grand Vizier ensemble, complete with a bold red sash and large black turban with a red feather and jewel. Iago will embody Jafar’s devious parrot lacky in a bright red shirt with matching balloon pants, sash, and red fez with an attached red feather. Add wigs to your rental order, such as Jasmine’s black ponytail wig with circlet, to complete your character’s look!
