Babes in Arms
Babes in Arms: This original 1937 Rodgers and Hart musical hit follows a group of teenagers left to their own devices one summer when their performing parents head off to work the Vaudeville circuit. Local authorities threaten to put the kids under public charge in a work farm until Val LaMar, supported by local tramp Billie, convinces the local sheriff to give them two weeks to put on a revue show and prove that they can support themselves. A one-time movie child star, Baby Rose, shows up to guarantee the show an audience and Val finds a producer, Lee Calhoun. Lee insists that Irving and Ivory DeQuincy not be allowed to perform because of their race. Val puts the DeQuincys on stage at the last minute and cements their fate to the farm. A chance crash landing by the famous aviator Rene Flambeau, however, gives the kids one more opportunity to put their show onstage. This original musical features a host of classic tunes including “My Funny Valentine,” “I Wish I Were in Love Again,” “Johnny One-Note” and “The Lady is a Tramp.”
