Cinderella’s Revival is a new retelling of the classic fairytale with music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, and book by Douglas Carter Beane based in part on Hammerstein’s 1957 book. Rodgers and Hammerstein originally wrote the songs for a 1957 televised broadcast of the fairytale starring Julie Andrews. The production was remade twice for television and adapted to the stage in a number of different versions until the 2013 Broadway revival, which was the first Broadway version of Cinderella with Rodgers and Hammerstein’s score. The new iteration of the Cinderella’s story introduces several new characters and features multiple new Rodgers and Hammerstein songs. The revival was nominated for nine Tony Awards, winning one for Best Costume Design.
This new version of the timeless fairytale follows a young woman named Ella, who lives with her cruel stepmother and stepsisters. Her stepmother and stepsisters torment her daily, treat her like a servant girl, and give her the nickname “Cinderella.” Ella dreams of a better life, and with the help of her Fairy Godmother, she transforms into an elegant princess and is able to attend the royal ball to meet her Prince. However, this new retelling of the age-old story brings a new twist to the tale. Prince Topher is an orphan and is raised by the evil Lord Chancellor Sebastian, and it takes Ella and her friends to help open the kind-hearted Prince’s eyes to the injustice in his kingdom.
The play begins Ella muses about dreams of a happier life in the “Prologue.” She wishes to escape being treated like a common servant by her stepmother, Madame, and her two stepsisters, the demanding Charlotte and the meek Gabrielle. Ella was left in her stepmother’s care after the death of her late father, and wants nothing more than to get away. Meanwhile, Topher, the orphaned prince of the kingdom, is overcome with uncertainty about how he will rule his kingdom when the time comes for him to ascend to the throne. The young man ponders these doubts through the song “Me, Who Am I?” The young prince meets Ella on his way to the royal palace. Before the prince departs for the palace, the two share a tender moment as she offers him a drink of water. Ella then meets with her friends Jean-Michel, an erstwhile revolutionary, and Crazy Marie, a batty woman who lives on the edge of the forest. Not soon after, Ella’s stepmother and stepsisters arrive, dragging Ella back home. Ella reflects again on her dreams through “In My Own Little Corner.”
From the very beginning of this tale, The Costumer’s Cinderella rental costumes will ensure that your audience is transported to Ella and her companions’ fantastical world! At the start, Ella will resemble a mistreated house servant in a ragged peasant dress, apron, and distressed headscarf. Brown or blonde ponytail styled wigs for Ella are also available for rental! Ella’s rags will serve as a stark contrast to elegant yet overdone ensembles worn by her stepmother and stepsisters. Madame will be draped in a rich and outlandish period dress, adorned with a lavish headpiece and matching cloves. The stepsisters will be dressed equally excessively with colorfully overdone period day dresses.
Meanwhile in the palace, Lord Chancellor Sebastian and his henchman, Lord Pinkleton, persuade the young prince that it is time that he found a bride so that he may be king. Sebastian and Pinkleton intend to host a royal ball in order to find a bride for Prince Topher. Thus, Pinkleton goes into town to make the decree. However, Pinkleton is met by Jean-Michel is rallying the townsfolk to protest against injustices committed by the royal government (“The Prince is Giving a Ball” / ”Now is the Time”). Madame and the stepsisters rush to the ball and leave Ella behind. Jean-Michel soon teases Ella too, saying that she should dawn a pretty dress, go to the ball, and tell Topher that the times are about to change. After joking with Ella about how life could be better, Crazy Marie reveals herself to be Ella’s Fairy Godmother through a magical transformation. Marie uses her magic to conjure a horse-drawn carriage and turn Ella’s rags into a beautiful gown (“Impossible”). As Marie sends Ella to the ball, she warns her that her spell will expire at the stroke of midnight.
The Costumer will help you achieve Marie and Ella’s extraordinary transformations through our rental trick dresses. With a twist and some sleight of hand, Marie’s dark and shabby robe will turn into a beautiful ball gown suited for a Fairy Godmother! Ella’s transformation will be equally awe-inspiring, for as she twirls her raggedy peasant dress, she will transform into a beautiful gleaming white ball gown, complete with a tiara!
