Dancing at Lughnasa
Dancing at Lughnasa: Brian Friel's Tony award winning drama, set in the fictional town of Ballybeg, County Donegal in 1936 Ireland, has quickly become a standard of regional and community theaters. Kate, Maggie, Agnes, Rose and Christina Mundy, five unmarried sisters, live in a cottage outside of town with Christina's seven year old son Michael. Their brother Jack, a missionary who has gone native, returns home with heretical views that get the family into trouble with the strict Catholic community. As the sisters struggle to maintain a sufficient income for the cottage, Michael's unreliable father Gerry, a traveling salesman, shows up unannounced, dragging up old memories of the sisters and their past suitors. A story of family struggle, faith and love, this 1990 play balances the hardships of poverty and bitterness with spontaneous dancing and unbounded love.
