Into the Woods stands out as a fairytale epic that has captured the imaginations of audiences for decades. The musical intertwines classic Brothers Grimm storybook characters into one fantastical tale. The story follows the childless Baker and his Wife as they venture into the woods and attempt to break the Witch’s curse, all the while other classic characters like Jack and Cinderella have their own wants and desires in the woods. When all their wishes are granted however, the consequences of their actions to achieve their wants come back to haunt them all. With sophisticated music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and book by James Lapine, Into the Woods has cemented itself as a modern Broadway classic since its debut at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego in 1986.
The Narrator begins the story by setting the scene: Three dwellings in a rather large forest belonging to Cinderella, Jack, and the Baker and his Wife. Cinderella is cleaning, Jack is attempting to milk his cow, Milky White, with no success, and the Baker and the Baker’s Wife are preparing bread for the following day. As The Narrator leads the ensemble through “The Prologue,” each of the aforementioned characters reveal wishes that each of them desperately want to come true. Cinderella wishes she could attend the King’s Festival, Jack wishes that Milky White could give milk, and both the Baker and his Wife wish to have a child. Cinderella’s Stepmother and Stepsisters laugh at the idea of her ever attending a royal ball. Jack’s Mother answers her son’s wish with her own: She wishes for a heaping amount of gold and a less foolish son. Little Red Ridinghood soon crosses the Baker’s doorstep to buy sticky buns and pies before beginning her journey into the woods to visit her grandmother.
From the moment that the curtains reveal this land of fairytales, The Costumer will ensure that your audience is immediately transported to the fantastical world of Into the Woods with the help of our fabulous rental costumes! Every cast member will look as though they just stepped out of a classic storybook in their respective character’s costume! Cinderella will appear to the audience as a downtrodden house servant in ragged peasant dress with muted tones, an apron, tattered shawl, and headscarf. Jack will resemble that of a youthful peasant boy in a full peasant shirt, matching peasant pants, vest, and scarf. Add a carrot top page boy wig to your order to complete Jack’s look! The Baker and the Baker’s Wife will bear resemblance to their aforementioned peasant counterparts with their humble costumes as well. Little Red Ridinghood’s peasant ensemble will be accented with her iconic red hooded cape as well!
Jack’s Mother ultimately has had enough of dealing with a cow that won’t give milk, and forces Jack to sell his beloved cow (which he keeps mistakenly referring to as “he”) in order to survive. Jack is heartbroken to be selling his best friend, but he sets of to market with Milky White at his mother’s command. Cinderella’s Stepmother and Stepsisters ride off to the festival without her, as she is left covered in ash and dust with tears in her eyes.
A humpbacked old witch with long gnarled fingers appears at the bakery and reveals to the Baker and his Wife that she placed a curse on the couple preventing them from having a child. She explains that she did this as punishment for the Baker’s father stealing vegetables from her garden and her magic beans many years ago. In addition to the curse, the Witch also took the Baker’s sister who the Baker did not even know existed. The Witch claims that she still has the Baker’s sister locked away, and that the only way that the Baker can break the curse of infertility is by bringing the Witch within three days before midnight a cow as white as milk, a cape as red as blood, hair as yellow as corn and a slipper as pure as gold. Thus, the Baker puts on his father’s old coat and sets off into the woods with the hopes of breaking the curse.
As the stories of the fairytale characters continues to unfold, The Costumer will continue to provide each and every actor with striking and remarkable costumes! The Witch will appear before the Baker and his Wife as the archetypal sorceress from classic storybook tales with black raggedy dress underneath a dark hooded cloak, and an optional wild gray witch wig to top of the look. The Stepmother and Stepsisters resemble a gaggle of Victorian women preparing for a royal ball with a variety of Victorian camisoles, bloomers, white tights, and luxurious robes. As more and more characters are introduced throughout the show, The Costumer will continue to diligently and carefully outfit each one, no matter how fantastical they may be!
