Little Night Music

Little Night Music: Stephen Sondheim and author Hugh Wheeler, inspired by the Ingmar Bergman fim Smiles of a Summer Night, took for their title the literal translation of Mozart's Serenade No. 13 for Strings in G Major. This sometimes heartbreaking musical won three Tony Awards, Best Musical, Best Book and Best Original Score. In Sweden at the turn of the 20th century, three couples struggle with their relationships and life choices. Fredrik Egerman is married to the 18 year old Anne, who, after eleven months of marriage, still refuses to sleep with her husband. Fredrik's son Henrik, just a year older than Anne, captures more of her attention. Desiree Armfeldt, a once prominent actress now bound to local tours, has left her daughter Fredrika to the care of her elderly mother Madame Armfelt. Madame and Fredrika watch as Desiree, mistress to Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm, rekindles an old flame for Fredrik and the Count's knowing wife, Charlotte, plots to win back her husband's favor. The emotional and social connections between the three couples grows ever more complicated, eventually climaxing at a summer evening party at Madame Armfeldt's country estate. Madame guides her young, solemn granddaughter with an old legend; the summer night has three smiles, one for the young (who know nothing), one for fools (who know too little) and one for the old (who know too much). Narrated in part by a quintet of Lieder Singers, this beloved musical boasts hit songs including "Send in the Clowns," "Night Waltz," "In Praise of Women," "Every Day a Little Death" and "It Would Have Been Wonderful."
