Mary Poppins is a musical based off of the timeless children’s books by P.L. Travers and the 1964 Disney film by the same name. The stage adaptation fuses various elements from the two sources, including songs from the Disney film. The musical features music and lyrics by Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman with additional music and lyrics by George Stiles and Anthony Drew, and book by Julian Fellowes. The musical follows the titular extraordinary nanny as she uses her charm and magic to repair the dynamics of the dysfunctional Banks family. The original West End production opened in December of 2004, and eventually opened on Broadway with a few minor changes in November of 2006. The Broadway adaptation received seven Tony Award nominations, including for Best Musical. After 2,619 performances, the original Broadway production ended its run. The musical has since become a popular production choice for community and scholastic theatre groups.
The story begins with Bert, a man of many professions, introduces the audience to the Banks family’s home at number 17 Cherry Tree Lane in Edwardian London (“Chim-Chim Cher-ee/Cherry Tree Lane – Part 1”). The members of the Banks family are introduced: George and Winifred Banks, their two misbehaving children Jane and Michael, their maid, Mrs. Brill, and their house boy, Robertson Ay. From the onset of the story, it is obvious that all is not well in the Banks household. Jane and Michael have just driven away their latest nanny, Katie Nanna, and Mrs. Brill and Robertson Ay bemoan in agreement that they are living in a “madhouse.” George asks his wife to write the advertisement for a new nanny, however the children decide to write the advertisement themselves and they list all of the requirements for “The Perfect Nanny.” Their father has a very different idea of what constitutes the perfect nanny, and in turn, throws his children’s advertisement in the fireplace. The family are all left to wonder if they will ever find the perfect nanny (“Cherry Tree Lane – Part 2”). Just as the family despairs, Mary Poppins arrives with the advertisement magically restored in hand, and she perfectly fits each of the children’s requirements (“Practically Perfect”).
From the very start of this timeless tale, The Costumer will ensure that your audience is immediately transported with the Banks family to Mary Poppins’ magical world with the help of our fabulous rental costumes! Our wide array of rental costumes will capture the essence of both early 20th century England and the sense of wonder that Mary Poppins brings along with her. Bert will kick off the production dressed as a traditional English chimney sweep in a sooty Edwardian jacket, button down shirt, pants, and neck scarf. Next, George Banks will appear as a well put together banker in a dark swallowtail coat, a sharp white Essex shirt, gray pants, a dapper straight tie, and pocket watch. Jane and Michael will embody that of two rambunctious youngsters of the era with Jane in a youthful dress, stockings, and a coordinating hairbow, and her brother clad in a juvenile pair of knickers, a button-down shirt, and a boyish vest and bowtie. Lastly, Mary Poppins will appear in her classic ensemble: a light blue striped blouse, matching blue skirt, white gloves, black coat, and her classic flat black hat adorned with flowers and orange scarf. If your actors playing Bert and Mary will be flying onstage, The Costumer is also happy to accommodate with costume pieces for each actor that feature holes for rigging!
As Mary takes over caring for the children, she brings the pair to the park for their first outing where they meet Bert. The children quickly become bored with the park and have reservations about Bert due to his scrappy appearance and try to escape. However, Mary teaches the Banks children to look past appearances and urges them to see the magic that lies in everyday life. To illustrate her lesson, Mary magically causes the park to burst with brilliant colors and the park statues to come dancing to life, including the statue of a mythological figure, Neleus (“Jolly Holiday”). The children are left amazed at what their new nanny is capable of showing them, and this is only the start!
As Mary begins to take the Banks children on fantastical adventures, The Costumer will continue to provide costumes that will catapult your audience into Mary’s wonderful world! The ensemble of Statues will look as though they are marble figures coming to life in an array of Grecian style tunics and drapes and gray unitards. Add Grecian style gray wigs to your rental and sales items like Easy Statue Makeup Kits to your order to truly complete the statuesque look! The Costumer also offers a wide variety of other sales items and props that will make your production come to life even more, such as Chimney Sweep Brooms, Victorian Lace-Up Boots for Mary, boater hats, extra wigs, and much more!
