Pygmalion

Pygmalion: First performed in 1913, this play was later adapted into the more popular musical of My Fair Lady, with little change made to the story. A phonetic professor Henry Higgins bets that he can teach a lower class girl to pass as a duchess by refining her character, through changing her mannerisms and perhaps more importantly her Cockney accent. Professor Higgins finds Eliza Doolittle and transforms her into a perfect lady, along the way exposing the audience to beliefs about the British class system from the time, and exploring the concept of a woman’s independence. Written by George Bernard Shaw.
